Summer Hockey Preparation Program

Hello Parents and Players,

First of all, we at Open Ice would like to express how much we really enjoyed working with some of you during the Winter Programs. We trust that the Players have benefited from these Programs through improved On-Ice Skills as well as Off-Ice Conditioning. This leads to improved success and ultimately having more fun playing the game of Hockey.

We would like to extend the opportunity of attending the 2008 Summer Hockey Preparation Program to all players who want to advance to that “Next Level”. This Program is designed to drastically improve the player’s Hockey conditioning throughout the off-season and still allow the player to participate in other summer activities, which are most beneficial to a Hockey Player’s development, (example, playing soccer).

As many of you already know, here at Open Ice we have the resources to combine necessary Dry-Land training with On-Ice (Open Ice) sessions to completely prepare a Player for the up coming Fall Try-out Camps and Season. We are very pleased to be able to add even more value to our Program by including 8 one hour “Real Ice” Sessions. This will enable us to concentrate on the Team Skills (see Summer Program Outline).

The Dry-Land portion of each 90 minute session, is designed to meet the specific needs of a Hockey Player using weight lifting/training, Ply metric training, core strengthening exercises as well as a lot of “Road Work” (running, sprinting) and Stretching to develop the Hockey Player, not a Body Builder or a Marathon Runner. Training is a must at any age, but doing it correctly is imperative for a hockey player.

The On-Ice portion will include conditioning and development of the physical and mental skills, the “Grey Area” of Hockey. Skating, shooting and Passing are “Black and White” skills that are important, but knowing when to implement them during a game is more important. Mental Skills like DECISION MAKING, Timing, Creativity, Vision, Quick Reaction, Anticipation and over all Hockey Sense are a necessity in today’s game, and must be developed in order to achieve an “elite” Hockey Player status. The Open Ice facility is perfectly dimensioned for developing these “Grey” skills as they can best be developed by going SMALLER than the norm, in this case the norm being a normal sized Hockey Arena. These techniques are proven and are utilized by MANY European countries like Russia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden and Finland in developing many of the most skilled players in the World. The “Game” has changed over the last decade or so, and so too have the “Rules” of Hockey Player Preparation.

The Summer Program will be offered in TWO 6 week segments.

The First 6-week segment will extend from June 16th- July 25th and will include 3 sessions per week. We are flexible and can accommodate any schedule preferences for the three days/week. All sessions are 90 minutes in length and include Dry Land and Open Ice training. The cost for this six-week program will be $360.00 payable in 2 installments of $180.00, on June 16th and July 7th.

The Second 6-week segment will run from July 28 to September 5. The first four weeks of this segment will have four 90-minute sessions per week, each session will include Dry-Land and Open Ice training, and one 60-minute “Real Ice” ice time. The last two weeks will have three 90-minute sessions and two 60-minute “Real Ice” ice times. The “Real Ice” sessions will be instructed with on-Ice support from former UNB player and current assistant coach of the Fredericton Midget AAA Canadiens, Tyson Flinn.

This intense Program is outlined in the attachment to this letter. It will take the player right up to the Fall Try-outs. The cost will be $600.00, again payable in 2 installments of $300.00, on July 28th and August 18th.

If preferred, a Winter Skills and Conditioning Maintenance Program will follow the Summer Programs. This Program is designed to accompany the Player throughout the season (designed to compliment Team training and games), and is a necessity in maintaining the fitness level achieved during the summer months.

As you can see Hockey is not just a winter sport any more, and requires year round focus, dedication and determination. Hockey does not only cost time and energy to reach “elite” status, but it also costs money. This is like any other investment or training session, it is not as important to do SOMEthing as it is to do the RIGHT thing.

Focusing on the Future,

- Jamie McKinley
